Steibel Scope
I began Steibel out of a desire to understand responsible business practices, find great products, and support better brands. I believe business can be a force of good in the world, and I wanted to find and support the brands already going there: leading with intentional care.
I understood a more holistic approach to sustainability to include product, people, and the planet, but I’ve come to call it brand responsibility (to include acts outside of just environmental). I will expand on the ways I understand responsible brand values below, and please feel free to send over any advice or feedback on this research!
Product
Hero Products
I appreciate a product that can add value to my life in a timeless way. I don’t like to store too many products, which naturally discourages buying trends, but I also find them to encourage unnecessary consumer purchase. I normally have an eye for trends and staying away, but I’ve had to research in the health & wellness industry more often nowadays.
Non-Toxic
I don’t want to worry (or one day learn) that my products are harmful to humans, animals, and/or the planet. I want my home to be safe and have products that are actually doing good for me.
People
Supply Chain Transparency
I want to trust the way people are treated within both the company and production. I’d hope people are treated well and paid fairly. I understand production is usually kept internal, but I want to learn more about third-party verifications, and brands are hopefully becoming more transparent.
Price Conscious
I appreciate being smart with my money and love to invest in a better brand, but not a significantly high margin. I personally purchase small-ticket items, more consistently, to invest most often.
Planet
Sustainability
Finally, environmental sustainability is a huge one, and I’m still learning more about it. There are so many variables within a business, from product ingredients to plastic and water usage, that impact a brand’s carbon footprint. I’m continuing to learn more, which will make it easier to understand responsible business practices, but it’s also great that there are a lot of third-party verifications that evaluate this specifically.
I will continue to document on the Steibel Scope series on the blog here & on the Substack newsletter as I learn more, and will update this upload with finalized brand criteria!
