Mason Jars are a Kitchen Essential.

I’ve primarily used mason jars as drinking glasses in the kitchen, but upon ordering an updated set of air-tight lids, I’ve come to use them in practical ways to support my day-to-day routine. I rotate between using original mason jars and smaller wide-mouth mason jars, but the best size is more dependent on intended usage. I would recommend upgrading from the original lids (which are prone to rust) for a more seamless process.

Practical Uses for Mason Jars in the Kitchen:
Dry Storage

Mason jars make excellent containers for dry storage because they’re both functional and aesthetic. They’re great for keeping food fresh for longer with air-tight storage.

Berry Storage

I clean my strawberries and blueberries by soaking them in a mixture of water and baking soda (1/2 tsp per 1 cup) for 10 to 15 minutes. I rinse & dry them before storing them in a mason jar with a dry paper towel at the bottom. I’ll add on an air-tight lid, and have found this little habit allows for much longer storage in the refrigerator!

Sourdough Starter

Mason jars are one of the best vessels for keeping a sourdough starter healthy, as long as you leave ample space for it to rise and ferment. It’s easy to track bubbles and growth, and glass helps to regulate temperature. I’ve had success with this blog recipe, which also has great sourdough discard recipes!

Small Pickling Batches

You can also use mason jars for simple pickling at home, and the glass vessel makes it easy to check on freshness in the fridge. This is a great dill pickle recipe for beginners.

Homemade Salad Dressing

Shake: ¾ cup of EVOO, ¼ cup of ACV, 1 tsp of Dijon Mustard, 1 tsp of Honey, ¼ tsp of Garlic Powder, and S&P. It’s simple and good on everything!
